The City of Johns Creek to host a Lunar New Year celebration on February 21

The City of Johns Creek will once again host their annual Lunar New Year festival, celebrating Asian culture and embracing the cultural diversity within the community. Set for February 21 at the Atlanta Athletic Club fields, this free, family-friendly event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature food trucks, live performances and plenty of fun.

Vendor and sponsor opportunities are still available, and volunteer opportunities will be open soon. A list of expected food trucks, vendor booths and entertainment will be announced closer to the festival date.

What is Lunar New Year?

Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival, is celebrated by millions of people around the world. It’s a time to honor cultural traditions and ancestors, enjoy family reunions and hope for good fortune in the coming year.

Elaborate meals, red decorations (and red envelopes with money, given from adults to children or between bosses and employees) and shooting off fireworks are just a few of the ways families mark the occasion.

Year of the Horse

This year, Lunar New Year falls on February 17, and festivities can last anywhere from 7–16 days. 2026 marks the Year of the Horse (the 7th animal in the 12-year cycle). According to Chinese astrology, the horse represents enthusiasm, adventure and speed — so the Year of the Horse is thought to be an ideal time for bold moves and exploration.

Another way to celebrate

The Art Center in Johns Creek is marking the holiday with a special art competition and exhibition. Local high school artists (in Fulton, Forsyth, DeKalb and Gwinnett Counties) are invited to submit any original art piece dedicated to the 2026 Lunar New Year by February 1. The work may depict motifs, symbols, animals, plants, food or anything that aligns with the holiday.

The first-place prize is $300; the second-place prize is $200; and third place will receive $150. All participants will receive a gift bag.

The exhibition will run from February 16–28 with a closing reception on the final day from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. For more information about the competition/exhibit, visit itstheartcenter.org/call-for-participation.
